How did you repoussed that? what was the bronze sheet lying on, while repousing? Do you have any photos of the other side of the shield?

hey there, I used a board that i transfered the design onto, then i used carved the design into this. i then repoused into the carving. once finished i turned the copper over and filled behind the design with modelling clay to keep it solid. then mounted it on the carved board. i used shaped timber stylii to push the copper into the carved design. and flatten and highlight the design once inverted.
hope that helps :) no photos of the reverse. but it is just leather covered board.

Damn, quite strange a technique have you used! Is it how the original finding form Battersea was made?

I have recently began repoussing, and I mount the metal sheet on repoussing tar. But the shield is far too large to mount it on tar, so I wondered how the Celts made their shields.

to be honest I have no idea how they did it originally......but, each circular section is an individual piece that is then riveted/nailed to a bronze/copper backsheet and the board... so maybe that is a way to do each piece on repousse tar?

thank you! it was my first attempt at repousse, but i think it came across well, the only part i was not happy with was the central boss, as on the original it is dished deeper (though i couldnt tell this till i saw it in the flesh!) the rest i tried to get as correct as possible! :)

Nice work. I have a friend who does a lot of repousse and you might be interested in looking at his site. [link]
